Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Wireless Communications Engineer to work in our Communication Technology Research department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our REC facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the Senior Manager over Communication Technology Research

Research and development of wireless technology. Develop prototype communication systems that adapt to unique and operational environments with technologies that may include, wired, wireless (RF and optical) links, line-of-sight (LOS) and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) links, SATCOM, IP networking, RF systems, protocols, software-defined radio (SDR), 5G (and beyond) cellular and cognitive radio.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Conduct research, development, demonstration, and deployment for wireless communications technologies. Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to determine a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Provide radio frequency (RF) wireless communication solutions for a range of wireless communication systems including high frequency (HF), ultra-high frequency (UHF), millimeter-waves and other radio frequencies.
  • Develop design documentation, maintenance and configuration of wireless communication systems, and research and development of advanced wireless communication techniques.
  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Prepare drawings, calculations, and specifications for communication systems. Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design.
  • Research and development activities associated with the advancement of communications techniques, such as new transmission methods, or for improving the security, efficiency and reliability of the wireless communications system infrastructure.
  • Oversee prototype testing in labs, and realistic environments to document and track issues for resolution.
  • Guide sprints, facilitated Agile poker, groomed backlog, and updated Kanban boards.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related field and 5-9 of relevant experience, Master’s in Engineering with 2-6 years relevant experience, Doctorate and 2-4 years relevant experience. 
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship. 

    The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Advanced degree in a directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution. 
  • Understand link budgets, communications protocols, digital signal processing, detection and estimation theory, and information theory.
  • Prior direct experience with RF communications theory, including modulation types, error correction coding, channel effects, antenna performance modeling, software-defined radios, and military and commercial satellite systems.
  • Strong systems engineering skills and familiarity with independent Verification & Validation (V&V) testing and technology deployment
  • C++, Python, MATLAB, or other modeling and analysis tools.
  • Have familiarity with Communications Engineering processes required to provide unbiased advice, create courses of action, analyze programs, and make recommendations.


Job Information: 

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588) / Level 4 ($109,260 - $223,908). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
